Alum powder which also known as potassium aluminium sulphate, has many uses and one of them is for water purification. Water purification is an important thing that we must take in order to make sure the water we drink is clean and safe. There are many chemicals that we can use to purify water. According to researchers, the water we drink contains harmful particles such as phosphorus particles. Alum has the power to bind phosphorus particles together so your water can be safe and secure to drink.

The process of water purification using alum powder is very simple and you can do it on your own. Start by assembling all the things you will need before you start the purification process. These include a clean container, the contaminated water and a reaction vessel. Put the contaminated in the reaction vessel and then stir continuously. Next, add at least 1.4 ounces of alum powder in the reaction vessel and stir continuously for five minutes. After sometime you will start to notice some sediments as the phosphorus particles are removed.

After the particles have settled down, you can now start the filtration process. Place the filtration apparatus over the container that will hold the clean water. It is important to label the container holding water that has already been purified to distinguish it from other containers holding contaminated water. Filter the water with alum powder using the filtration apparatus. The phosphorus particles will not be allowed to pass the filtration apparatus, and at the end of the day you will have clean water.

When you use alum powder for water purification, the impure particles in the water are bound together in order to form water sediment. These bound particles are heavier than water, and thus they settle at the bottom of the container holding the water, making it easy for you to get rid of them. If you live in the rural area this powder is perfect for you. People in rural areas usually use water from streams and rivers, and the water might contain phosphorus from grazing lands and farms. Use the chemical to get rid of these chemicals to keep your loved ones safe. However, this does not mean that the chemical can not be used in urban centres. Water might contain small particles even after it has already been purified.

The alum works by holding the particles together so they can gain weight and sink in the container. To do this, you will need to have two containers, one for holding the clean water and another one for holding the contaminated water. A filtration apparatus will be used to filter the water. The alum powder works effectively to protect you and your family from water borne diseases.
